1-5-13 Take My Life

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.?19?Come, follow me,??Jesus said,??and I will send you out to fish for people.??20At once they left their nets and followed him.21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,?22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. (Mt. 4:18-20)

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him,??Follow me.? 44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.?45Philip found Nathanael and told him, ?We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote?Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.? (John 1:43-45)

When you think of texting while driving, think of the number 23.? You are 23% more likely to have an accident while texting while driving.? Also 23% of all accidents occur because of one party texting while driving.? 440,000 were injured last year because of distracted driving.
We lift up those who multi-task.? But there are some things on which we should not multi-task.? Important tasks that require our attention and focus.? Driving requires a lot of attention- and young drivers have to be taught that.? God also requires attention.? He tells us to remember the Sabbath Day to
keep it holy.? Sabbath means to stop or rest.? We are called to stop look and listen- to focus on God.? Jesus said to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.? We are designed to love God and to know the love of God.? If you want to love God- focus.
The husband was watching one of many bowl and playoff games.? His team was up by 10 and there was a quarter to go.? His wife was trying to tell him about an important conversation she had with their son that would doubtless effect their child for the rest of their life.?She said, ?Junior says he wants to take a year and not go to college at all.?? He said, ?Uh- huh.?? She was getting upset, ?Did you hear what I said?? I?ll bet you can?t tell me what I
just said!?? He was trying? but he really just wanted to watch TV.? He knew TV was not as important as his wife or his child? so he tried: ?You said, ?Junior says he wants to play ball here and not take a timeout at all.?? She rolled her eyes and stormed out and he lifted up his hands and said, ?what?!?
Too many times we think entertainment is more important than reality.? But TV is not life, video games are not real, and your computer or tablet or red hot deal is not as important as the people in your room.? Distractions need to be seen for what they are.? Yet we need to leave room for entertainment and joy.
WHEN JESUS CALLED THE DISCIPLES-THEY DROPPED THEIR NETS-? Their nets were their livelihood.? It was impractical and
seemed unproductive to drop their nets.? They would have made more money if they had kept their nets.? Nets may help us, but they also entangle
us.? What are the things you are entangled in that is keeping you from being free to focus on God.
WHEN JESUS CALLED HIS DISCIPLES- HE CALLED THEM TO FOLLOW- To follow someone you have to look up and see where they
are going.? You have to walk in their steps, and as Jesus said, stay on the narrow way and not turn to the right or left.?????? When you are first learning how to drive, you tend to overcompensate.? So maybe when you start to go right you pull hard to the left, but then you have to pull hard to the right to keep from going into that oncoming lane of traffic.? I remember my Driver?s Ed teacher in high school in Columbia telling me, ?Don?t try so hard– just
keep your eyes focused on the road ahead and take it easy.?? That was good advice.? It is good advice spiritually too.? Do not try so hard in your Christian life- it is not all up to you.? Let Jesus help you- just keep your eyes fixed on Him.
YOU HAVE TO GIVE HIM YOURSELF- YOUR LIFE- The song says, ?Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to Thee.?? I know a football coach who gives each of his players a chip that says, ?All in.?? Before they go on the field, they have to put that chip in a box to indicate they are not half there, but fully invested, fully focused. You can?t be focused on your girlfriend, your parents, your grades if you want to do well. ?I can remember the first
time I dived off of the high dive
into the little lake we swam in.? It looked like a great thing to do.? I heard the other kids scream and squeal with
delight as they jumped.? But the first time I climbed up that ladder, it sure seemed taller than when I looked at it before.? I hesitated.? I got to the top with all these kids behind me, and I stood there and went back down.? I wimped out.? I was really young, but I never forgot it, and before the day was over I had dived off five times and I never backed down again.? Don?t be afraid to dive in- to give yourself to God.?Do not be afraid to commit yourself to the church, to Bible study, to prayer, to communion today. There are so many distractions, and so many excuses to not let God take your life- but do not listen to the voices of distraction or fear.? Give yourself to the One who loves you and gave Himself for you.
