12-9-12 Stated Session Minutes

Lake Murray Presbyterian Church

The Session of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church met at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church with the following in attendance:  Senior Pastor, Dr. Ben Sloan; Elders, Jennifer Aldrich, Bill Bearden, Lovic Brooks, Peggy Burgin, Mark Clement, Gail Comalander, Eddie Edwards, Pam Harrell, Billy Higginbotham, Danny Hood, Pam Hutto, Robbie Johnson, Michael Long, Doug Martin, Dan McGehee, Mike Murrell, Ruthanne Nicholson, Larry Owens, Alan Peace, Ray Peterson, Lyn Richards, and Lorrie Watkins.  Excused: Judy Jarrett Brown and Ellen Edwards.

The meeting was opened by Ben Sloan with reading from I Timothy 517, singing of a Christmas carol, and an opening prayer.

Old Business:

Survey results from Stewardship Dinner to be presented at Officers’ Retreat.

A recommendation by APNC to approve CIF was passed.

Committee Reports

Presbyterian Women-

Julia Hermelin reported that record number attended Dec 4 Christmas Party, including 9 non-members.  On Dec 8, poinsettias unloaded and watering plan set.  Dessert sale planned for Dec 16.  Gift card of $650 plus gift cards donation to Gift Tree and $1159 to Thornwell.

Deacons-

Susan Powell amended yearly report from November Session meeting to reflect 5 funerals, 39 meals provided and 157 others offered.

Officer Examinations-

Newly elected Elders Thurston Chavis, Tripp Chavis, Manita Craft, Eddie Edwards, Lauren Evans, Shelby Harrell, Jane Jermac, Robbie Johnson, Oscar Lovelace, and Susan Powell and Deacon Lou Ann Summers were examined.  A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve them.

Ben Sloan noted that the Officers’ Retreat would take place on January 12, 2013 at Saxe Gotha beginning at 9:30 am.  He thanked the Elders who were rotating off the Session for their work.

Finance Report-

No meeting but Alan Peace reported meeting planned for Dec 20 to review current status—currently $29,000 in the hole.  Pledge update-164 pledges for $623,000+.

Administration­-

No report.  Ben Sloan briefly updated on Presbytery meeting earlier today.

Christian Education-

Bill Bearden distributed and highlighted minutes of last meeting.  New TVs to be purchased for youth and elder rooms.  Lorrie Watkins reported there were 7 in the confirmation class and asked for sponsors.  Information available in elder room.

[Ben Sloan requested that remaining reports be limited to motions and other essential information due to length of meeting.]

Fellowship-

No motion.

Evangelism & Assimilation-

No motion.

Worship-

No motion.  Pam Hutto noted that second service plans placed on hold until new associate pastor called.

Long Range Planning-

No motion.  Eddie Edwards noted that will meet in December to review full architect report and budget.  Ben Sloan noted a capital campaign committee forming.

Property-

No motion

Missions

No motion.  Lynn Richards asked unused budget funds be made available to committee if budget met.

Personnel-

No motion.

New Church Development -

No report.

New Business

Motions were made, seconded, and passed to:

Approve baptism of Gavin Kyle Senn on January 27, 2013 and joining of Kyle Senn;

Approve baptism of Jackson Long on February 10, 2013;

Approve joining of Tristan Shaffer on December 23, 2012; and

Approve transfer of Bill and Jean Gregory to new church in Louisiana.

The meeting was closed with prayer by Dr. Ben Sloan.
