8-12-12 Stated Session Meeting

Lake Murray Presbyterian Church

7:00 pm

The Session of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church met at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church with the following in attendance:  Senior Pastor, Dr. Ben Sloan;  Associate Pastor, Rev. Tracie Stewart; Elders, Jennifer Aldrich, Bill Bearden,  Lovic Brooks, Judy Jarrett Brown, Peggy Burgin, Mark Clement, Gail Comalander, Eddie Edwards, Ellen Edwards, Pam Harrell, Billy Higginbotham, , Pam Hutto, Robbie Johnson, Michael Long, Dan McGehee, , Ruthanne Nicholson, , Ray Peterson, Lyn Richards,  and Lorrie Watkins.  Excused: Danny Hood, Doug Martin, Mike Murrell, Larry Owens, and Alan Peace.

The meeting was opened by Ben Sloan with a reading from Jeremiah and a prayer.

A Quorum was declared

Correspondence:

A thank you note from Jack Barwick family was circulated.

A July 6, 2012 thank you letter from SC Presbyterian Communities for Mother’s Day offering was circulated.

Special Report:

Tracie Stewart presented a summary of the General Assembly meeting using a PowerPoint presentation

Old Business:

Discussion of the Board of Pension letter was tabled until the next meeting.

Committee Reports

Presbyterian Women-

No representative.

 

 

Deacons-

Melissa Hattaway reported that a funeral policy had been completed and referred to Administration Committee for consideration.  24 people on care list and 168 contacts in July.

Finance Report-

Written minutes of August 9 meeting were distributed and highlighted by Lovic Brooks.  Finance Committee endorsed recommendation to be presented by Long Range Planning Committee on property plans.

Administration­-

No report.

Christian Education-

Written minutes of July 16 meeting were distributed. Committee asked for prayer for 40 Days of the Word.

Fellowship-

No report.

Evangelism & Assimilation-

Written minutes of July 20 meeting were distributed.  Gail Comalander presented Committee motion to approve directional signs around property to be provided by a member, which was passed.

Worship-

No report.

Long Range Planning and Property-

Written minutes of August 1 meeting were distributed and reviewed by Eddie Edwards and Ben Sloan.  12 tables and 102 chairs have been ordered per prior Session approval to use Martha Wheeler’s will gift for that purpose.

Long Range Planning recommended:    1) that we begin planning work on the Children’s’ Ministry Building (someone has offered 20% of $1.5 estimated cost to secure the loan and prime the giving pump),  2) that we retain an architect, Doug Quackenbush, for $20,000 to do the planning on the overall property (one member has offered to pay one half and another member may pay the other half), 3) that we authorize the expenditure of up to $50,000 to assist a member negotiating to buy  the adjacent property, who would grant us an easement to gain access to Wessinger Road.  After discussion, a motion was passed to approve all three recommendations.

 

Missions

Written minutes of July 3 and August 6 meetings were distributed.

New Business

A motion was made, seconded and passed to authorize Elders Eddie Edwards and Alan Peace to sign on behalf of the Session legal documents related to the property matter discussed above, including loan documents..

The meeting was closed with prayer by Dr. Ben Sloan.
