LOOK E-MAIL EDITION
October 8, 2010 LMPC: “Faithful and Fruitful”
Sermon:
“The Plight of the Little Man”………..………………………………….………Dr. Pat Griffin
Scripture Lesson:
Numbers 13:26 - 14:4; Luke 19:1 - 10
Bens Bin…
I am excited about Wednesday nights coming up.
It is just four weeks, but these are important weeks.
I have found some miss in the fall because of sporting events (their
children’s or their college’s), and this will provide an opportunity for some
spiritual nourishment mid-week. This
whole idea started from many different people coming to me wanting a small group
gathering- a grief support group; a job loss support group; the Disciples group
to get together; those who care for elderly parents to meet; parents of college
students to just get together at least once; the Men of the Church to get
together. WOW- Worship on Wednesdays
provides a venue for informal worship, support, nourishment (physically and
spiritually) and good fellowship.
The
format of these meetings will be like the Learning on Lent meetings in the
spring. We’ll have dinner at 6:00, a
five minute devotion, and then break up into our groups 6:40 until 7:30.
We have four weeks- with four good meals.
10/20 the Presbyterian Women are bringing a variety of soups.
10/27 is a chicken bog cook-off; 11/3 the Presbyterian Men cook; 11/10 is
a chili cook-off. One of my
fears is that we have so many good things going on, that people won’t adjust to
finding the golden nugget that is just meant for them.
But I trust that God’s call for us in these opportunities will not go
unanswered.
SUPPORT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS
The Recession is over.
That’s what I heard about a week and a half ago- it has been over, these
economists said since June 2009. I’m
not sure I believe them. There are
some signs of hope, however fragile they may be.
Dow Jones is up 12.58% a pretty good return on investment.
Job losses are not as steep as they have been.
But unemployment remains high.
How can the church help? When
the recession was first kicking in, we allowed Walmart to do hiring from our
church. Now we are beginning a
ministry for those who have lost their jobs but are looking for work.
It is called Crossroads Career Net (see
www.crossroadscareernet).
Wayne Ammons has been through the program at Eastminster Presbyterian and
found it has helped him. It
gives practical solutions about how to handle the problems of job loss- (family,
economic and emotional pressure), but also very practical tips on how to get
your resumee out there, interviewing tips, and more.
The group will meet for at least three weeks this fall- 10/27, 11/3,
11/10. If you know someone who has
lost their job PLEASE tell them about this important program- it is free to them
as a ministry of the church.
DIVORCE SUPPORT-
Some have said that divorce is like a long death.
You keep seeing or hearing from
the person with whom you have a broken relationship and it brings back
all the flood of emotions. Dr. Pat
Griffin is eminently qualified through his training and experience in counseling
and life to help lead this group. If
you know someone who is facing a hard time because of a divorce, this might be
the right class for them. This
group will meet 10/20 in

admission. We will have hayrides, games, pumpkin carving, a maze walk on the new
trail in the woods, hot dog dinner and s’mores cooked over the fire.
Youth groups will not be meeting that night, so come and bring your
families. We need volunteers to help
with the different stations. We
are looking for some pop-up tents to borrow for the festival. See Jane
Jermac or Lorrie Watkins if you would be willing to help.
Operation Christmas Child
It is hard to believe that it is time to
think about Christmas and filling shoeboxes again!
Last year along with the Boy Scouts, we donated around 75 boxes.
This year I think we can top that!
This is a great way for your children to learn to share with children who
may only receive this one shoebox at Christmas.
The Sunday School children will be receiving brochures and instructions
on how to fill the boxes. This would
also be great project for adult Sunday School classes to adopt, also.
There will be extra brochures on the shelf outside fellowship hall. We
will be delivering the boxes to the local drop-off location during the week of
November 15.
