One of the things that distinguishes the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) from other Presbyterian denominations is its willingness to ordain women to positions of leadership.  There is a biblical basis for this.  Phoebe was a deaconess; Lydia had a church meet in her home and was the first baptized convert in all of Europe; Deborah in the Old Testament was a judge and ruler; Isaiah's wife and Huldah were prophetesses; In the New Testament Anna was a prophetess. Philip had four daughters who were also prophetesses (Acts 21:9).  The New Testament speaks of the time being fulfilled when both sons and daughters shall prophecy= speaking forth God's Word (Acts 2:17).  Certainly, the women told the first good news about the resurrection of Christ.  In the early history of the Church, women played an important leadership role (see picture below).  The PCUSA believes if the Holy Spirit gives leadership gifts to a woman, and the church wishes to call a woman, they have the right to answer the call of the Spirit.

Deaconess of Thessalonika; Xenia Deacoess of Rome.

8/25-27 Dr. Sloan and Lovic Brooks (stated clerk) attended the Fellowship of Presbyterian conference in Minneapolis.  This was a group of Presbyterians in the PCUSA who are concerned about the direction of the denomination and are looking for a way to quell the debate and move forward in unity.
Dr. Sloan has stated that we hope to be faithful to the scriptures and faithful to the church to which God has called us.  For more information see the Fellowship of Presbyterian website:http://www.fellowship-pres.org/.
10/8/11- Scott Anderson is the first openly ordained gay minister to be ordained in the PCUSA.
He was ordained in Wisconsin. See:  http://www.pres-outlook.com/component/content/article/44-breaking-news/11911-scott-anderson-ordained.html
10/9/11- Session voted to form a task force to consider denominational topics made up of former and current clerks of session.  Lake Murray's session voted 80% to uphold the standard of marital fidelity and chastity in singleness as it relates to ordination of our elders, deacons, and ministers.
11/13/11- Session votes to pay per capita but to allow individuals to withhold their funds.
12/11/11- Session votes to send Dr. Sloan and an elder to the Orlando Fellowship of Presbyterian Conference
